MR-Head
  [Abk. für Magneto-resistive Head, »magnetoresistiver Kopf«], Lesekopf einer Festplatte, der den magnetoresistiven Effekt (MR-Effekt) ausnutzt. Bei diesem Effekt ändert sich der elektrische Widerstand eines speziellen (magnetoresistiven) Materials in Abhängigkeit vom einwirkenden Magnetfeld.
 
Ein MR-Kopf besteht im Wesentlichen aus einem Sensor aus magnetoresistivem Material, durch den Strom fließt. Der Widerstand ändert sich unter dem Einfluss der Magnetfelder auf der Festplattenoberfläche. Diese Widerstandsänderungen führen zu Strom- und Spannungsschwankungen, die dann als Signale ausgelesen werden. Demgegenüber erfassen herkömmliche Leseköpfe die Magnetisierung durch Induktion.
 
Die MR-Technik wird nur bei Leseköpfen eingesetzt; Schreibköpfe - die bei MR-Festplatten i. d. R. getrennt ausgeführt sind - arbeiten weiterhin induktiv.
